HISTORY OF CAMOGIE

1927 - 1940.

Organised Camogie began in the Ballyshannon area in 1927. Most of the games that the Ballyshannon team played were challenge games or games that would have been for charity. Their main opponents in those days were Belleek and Derrygonnelly - Co. Fermanagh, Bundoran and Kiltyclogher - Co. Leitrim . The 1927 to 1940 players must receive special attention in any history of sport in Ballyshannon as they were the pioneers of Camogie and Ladies games locally.

The Tuohy years 1953 - 1956.

After the great panel of 1927 - 1940 there was a lull in the sport locally for a decade. In 1946 Tom Tuohy, a native of Ballaghadereen, settled in Ballyshannon and decided to form a Camogie team. The Camogie group lasted for about three years and a few injuries contributed to its demise.

Success 1985 - 1991.

The year 1985 saw the revival of Camogie in the Aodh Ruadh Club after a lapse of many years. Special mention must be made here to Maura Logue, Alan Kane and the late Mick Shannon R.I.P. who promoted the sport during this period. In 1987 the U-14 Camogie team made history by winning the Donegal Championship defeating Letterkenny in a great game by a point.

Decline.

The period following, 1991 to June 1995 saw no Camogie being played in the club, and was a very bleak time indeed with the club failing to field a team for five years at any level. In June 1995 Barry & Eoghan Ruadh O'Neill with the help of Michael Kerrigan revived the sport and it has continued to develop since then.
